Composite Bonding, What is it?

Composite bonding: What is it?

Are you looking to discuss potentially changing your smile and boosting your confidence?

Here at St Annes Dental Clinic we take pride in helping our patients boost their confidence with a new smile makeover. If you are thinking about composite bonding or unsure if it’s for you, we have put together a guide of what happens within each step of composite bonding for you to get an understanding of what it is. If you have any questions, you can speak to our friendly team at any time for more information.

What will happen during my consultation?

Your consultation will be similar to your dental check up, the dentist will greet you and discuss some dental records as we need to ensure you have a healthy mouth before we think about changing your smile. During this check, the dentist may require routine x-rays to determine this and will take notes of previous dental history (if you are new to us).

The dentist will then discuss what you like and dislike about your teeth as it is important we know what it is you’re looking for, we will always guide you on what looks best for you – this will take planning!

We will discuss if composite bonding is right for you, we are always transparent with our patients and will never do treatment if we don’t think it is right for you. If this is the case we will guide you on which treatment will be best for you.

Please note due to guidelines we are not able to provide treatment to those under 18 years of age.

ITero Scan & Photographs

This part will include some clinical photographs to plan your brand new smile. All photographs will be kept private and we will not share on our social media without your consent. We only share your new dreamy smile if you would like us to!

When you have had photographs taken, you will

have a digital scan taken of your current teeth. This helps the dentist plan your new smile with our laboratory, this helps us create a mockup of your new potential smile.

The photos will be carried out by the dentist you will be seeing for your treatment. The scan will be done by one of our digital scanning nurses once the photographs have been taken.

Smile Try (Mock up)

We will try your new smile using a trial technique, this is to ensure you are happy with everything before going ahead with anything permanent. We will trial the shade of the composite to ensure you are happy with the new look, the shape and length of the teeth. This will be done by using wax up of the potential new teeth.

All materials used at this appointment are temporary and will be taken off before you leave. We ask for you to bring someone along with you to this appointment to get another opinion on your new upcoming smile. Don’t worry if you can’t bring anyone along, our dentist and nurses are here to give their opinions on what we think looks best for you!

Here is a little look at what a mock up would look like at this appointment, this will be created from the digital scan you had at the previous appointment to mock up what your potential new smile would look like!

On the day

AKA, the exciting part!

Depending on how many teeth we are building up will determine how long we need for your appointment, we will always do treatment in one session. We will tell you when you come for your pre assessment appointments beforehand how long it will take to build your new smile.

We will prep the teeth beforehand to ensure teeth are clean and plaque free before placing any material onto the surface. The dentist will then place tape around the teeth to ensure they are isolated. The teeth will then have an etch liquid placed onto the surface to allow materials to stick. This will be washed and dried to allow a bond to be placed.

The teeth will then be built up using a composite moulding technique, this will be done using a mould that has been customised to your mouth and an injectable composite material to create your new teeth shape around your current teeth.

Once composite has been placed the dentist will remove any excess material carefully, this will similarly feel like a filling. The dentist will do any final shaping and polishing to finish your perfect dream smile.
